Battle rap regularly fills venues across Germany, is increasingly present online and is mobilising a steadily growing fan base. Rafael Schmauch – a pioneer of the scene and long-standing protagonist – offers a glimpse behind the scenes of this special art form in his book “Battle Rap: The Art of Insulting”. He traces the development of an art form that has thrived for two decades on linguistic sharpness, performative intelligence and ritualised competition. At the same time, he reveals exactly how battle rap works, discussing apt angles, cracking punchlines and convincing performances.
